1GOAL: Education for All

1goal john aloisi

Today, 69 million children in the world are denied the chance to go to school. It doesn't have to be this way. Since 2000, 40 million more children find themselves in school. Education beats poverty - and gives people the tools to help themselves.

1GOAL is a worldwide campaign with over 18 million supporters who have raised their voices to call upon world leaders to do more about making education a reality for the millions of boys and girls who remain out of school.

There were some important strides guaranteeing the education these children deserve at the Millennium Development Goals Summit in New York in September. Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd committed $5 billion to education aid efforts over the next five years, and crucially - 70% of that aid would be directed at primary education.

Young Ambassadors competition

Here in Australia, the 1GOAL team ran a competition in partnership with ActionAid Australia to find Young Ambassadors for Education. The competition  encouraged school children nation-wide to make a short video detailing why Education for All should be important to all Australians and to offer an opportunity for two students to experience the realities of some of the world's most disadvantaged communities.

The winners of the Young Ambassadors competition were teenagers Alishia Tomlinson and William Oxley from Goulburn High School in regional New South Wales (see video below).

William and Alishia will be travelling to a marginalised community on Lake Victoria in Uganda to witness firsthand what effect the lack of education is having on young people throughout the third world.
