Members believe that by supporting special projects such as the Paralegal Project, women in Australia can help women in Afghanistan understand their rights to protection against gender-based violence.
ActionAid's Women for Influence network started in Denmark in 2007 and now has over 1,200 members. These women's rights advocates have fundraised over $500,000 for special projects focusing on women and education in communities where women are particularly vulnerable.
What Women for Influence Australia aims to achieve:
- Raise money for Paralegal Training project in Afghanistan 2011
- Stand in solidarity with women affected by violence in Afghanistan
- Empower other women to make a difference in their community
The Project
In view of the difficult and complex situation for women's rights in Afghanistan, ActionAid developed the Paralegal Project in 2008 with support from UNIFEM. A pilot was successfully implemented resulting in the training and establishment of a group of 30 women paralegals working in their communities to support women who are survivors of violence against women.
Building on learnings from the pilot project, this initiative will raise awareness about women's rights; will highlight how these rights are reflected in the context of Islam and international law; and will train a core group of women who can serve as case workers and paralegals so as to help survivors of violence seek psycho-social and medical support, ensure their security and gain fair access to legal compensation.
