The Caravan of Hope is a awareness-raising roadtrip organised by the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) in the lead up to COP17, to be held in Durban, South Africa. The campaign is aiming to bring together communities from diverse backgrounds in Eastern and Southern Africa, encouraging them to come together to tell the African story of climate change and demand climate justice.
The awareness-raising campaign has two main parts, education and action. For example, when the caravan arrived in Uganda there was a climate justice concert. The aim of this event was to appeal to young people, using music as a tool to engage and educate them about climate change. The audience were then encouraged 'speak up 4 climate justice', signing petitions calling for real action on climate change at COP17.
Today the caravan will reach Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe where music will again be used as a campaigning tool, with a climate walk with Zimbabwean musician Oliver Mtukuzi. The Caravan of Hope will then continue through Zimbabwe, before passing through Botswana and arriving in South Africa on November 27th, completing its 10,000km journey.
ActionAid is one of a number international NGOs, including Oxfam and Christian Aid, supporting the caravan's journey. Two of ActionAid's Activista bloggers have joined the Caravan of Hope on their journey to blog and tweet about all the news from the road.
