Photo of the week: the real diamonds of Sierra Leone

Written by  Archie Law   Friday, 05 November 2010

Kola Tree Community School, in Western Area, Sierra Leone is part of ActionAid’s Access to Primary Education project in Sierra Leone.

This type of project is vital in Sierra Leone, which is still facing reconstruction challenges eight years after the civil war ended. Tens of thousands perished in the decade long war which saw as many as ten thousand child soldiers fighting in the conflict.

The Access to Primary Education project seeks to increase access to quality education through the creation of suitable learning environments.

Each school project will be community based and involve active community participation. There will be no charges levied except for some small community contributions.  Over 300 children will benefit per school.

Each project will include the construction of a six classroom school structure, tables and chairs, learning materials and water and sanitation facilities.

To ensure the school projects are sustainable, each will be managed by a community based school management committee and training will be provided to school facilitators.
