Why sponsor a child with ActionAid?

ActionAid began as a sponsorship charity in 1972 sponsoring just 88 children in two countries. Today we reach over 225,000 children across 31 countries, but sadly there are still thousands more who need our support.

ActionAid's commitment to providing basic rights like food, shelter, and education is the driving force behind Child Sponsorship. Issues like these can only be solved through long term involvement – which is why the consistent support you provide through Child Sponsorship is so important.

With your support we work with the whole community in which your sponsored child lives: from individual families up to village leaders. So you know exactly where your money is going and we can work together with communities to bring appropriate, long lasting change, which will mean your sponsored child can look to the future with hope.

We believe this is by far the most effective way of helping a child in need.

Working with communities

Sponsoring a child is a commitment to changing their life. And, because the biggest thing in any child's life is their family and friends, it's a commitment to them too.

For example, we'd never single out one child for schooling, but would bring education to the whole community, so that they can learn and play together with all their friends and change their futures together.

ActionAid fieldworkers partner with the local community in the fight against poverty. We establish that sponsorship is right for the area; then, by listening to peoples needs and developing solutions together, we ensure people can learn about their human rights and manage their own development.
