Our Children

Right now there are thousands of children waiting for someone like you to give them the support they so desperately need.

ActionAid Australia have identified a select group of children needing your help in both Cambodia and Uganda, where we have our rights based projects situated.

When you choose to support a child through ActionAid's Child Sponsorship program we'll suggest somewhere where a child is urgently waiting for your support. There are over 1,000 children currently in need of an Australian sponsor.

Please help us by sponsoring a child today.

Sotheary

Sotheary lives in the Kampong Speu Province, which is in the South West of Cambodia. She is 14 years old and lives with her sister and widowed mother.

Sotheary usually gets up early in the morning and helps her mother before she leaves for school. At noon time, she tends to their cow. When her mother returns home in the afternoon, usually exhausted, Sotheary takes over all the household duties. In the evening they then go out to collect snails from the rice field behind their house. They usually take around two hours to collect 3 to 4 kilos of snails, which they sell for roughly 13 Australian cents.

“Before my mother thought I was grown up and could take over a lot of her work, but after the meeting in our village about child rights, my mother changed the way she treated me.

Thank you to ActionAid and my mother for encouraging me to do well in my studies”

Working to end discrimination against people with a disability

When Soa  was four years old, she had a serious case of measles that left her blind and disfigured in one eye.

Now 14, Soa  recalls being teased by neighbours and friends, and even by her own family. “I was really ashamed”, she says, and this impacted upon her confidence and ability to concentrate at school. ActionAid was able to arrange for Soa to get treatment in Phnom Penh for her eye. Soa now has more confidence and hopes to continue studying so that she can spread awareness about disability awareness.

“I’m so lucky that my eye was cured before it transmitted to my other eye. I’m really thankful that ActionAid and KDDF cared and helped me.”
