Our Board and Executive Director

ActionAid Australia is governed by a board of directors who generously volunteer their time to the organisation. 

Our Board is responsible for overseeing ActionAid's strategic direction and instituting good governance policies and rocesses.

Executive Director

Archie Law
Archie Law has worked in conflict affected environments throughout Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Prior to joining ActionAid, Archie worked for the United Nations Development Program in South Africa and the UN's Department of Peacekeeping Operations in New York.

Archie was a member of the UN team that developed the contingency plan for an emergency response to the conflict in Iraq in 2002-2003.

He also spent four years heading up the Mine Advisory Group's 500-person Cambodia Program.

Before joining the non-profit sector, Archie was a drummer for the 1980s band Huxton Creepers. The group released three albums and gave over 500 live appearances throughout Australia.

The Hon John Dowd AO QC
John Dowd was appointed Protection Ambassador for Austcare in 2005, elected Vice-President in November 2008 and President in October 2009. John has held the positions of NSW Attorney General and Leader of the House, Consul-General for the Cook Islands to Australia, NSW Supreme Court judge, and Australian government delegate to Palestine to monitor the Palestinian Legislative Council Elections.

Vice-President

bill armstrong Bill Armstrong AO
Bill joined the Austcare board in 2003 and was elected Vice-President of ActionAid Australia in October 2009. He was Chief Executive Officer of Australian Volunteers International from 1982 to 2002 and President of the Australian Council for International Development from 1993 to 1997. Bill is a recipient of the Sir Edward Weary Dunlop Asia Medal for outstanding achievement and long-term commitment to enhancing the quality of life for people in Asia.

Directors

Megs Alston
Megs joined the board in June 2011. Formerly a solicitor and a teacher, Megs has worked in senior management roles in international development for over 25 years, with Community Aid Abroad/Oxfam, Australian Volunteers International and Save the Children Austalia. She is now an independent consultant in the development sector with a focus on planning. monitoring and evaluation.
Susan Brennan
Susan joined the board in February 2011. Susan has been actively involved in women’s and community organisations, serving as President of the World YWCA from 2007 to 2011. She is a barrister specialising in town planning and environment law.
nicoladavies Nicola Davies
Nicola joined the Board in April 2010. She has worked in campaigning organisations for nearly fifteen years. Nicola has held positions at the ACT Conservation Council, Australian Conservation Foundation and ACT Environmental Defenders Office. More recently Nicola has worked in a variety of roles for Greenpeace in Australia and internationally.
tuongquangluu Tuong Quang Luu AO
Tuong Quang Luu joined the board in 2007. He was Head of SBS Radio from 1989 to 2006, and was named "Australian Achiever of the Year" in 2002. Quang Luu was a senior executive of the Australian Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs and has served as the Department's State Director for NSW in Sydney.
James Pyne
James joined the board in 2010. He has spent almost two decades working within corporate organisations, both as a strategy consultant and in various senior management positions in Australia, the UK and Asia. He is an Engineer by training and is also an MBA graduate from INSEAD.
Gordon Weiss
Gordon Weiss joined the board of ActionAid in June 2011. He is an international affairs analyst and author, specialising in strategic communications and risk mitigation. He has worked as an international public sector executive with many organisations, think-tanks, and public leaders since 1996, in complex security environments. He was the UN's communications advisor and spokesperson in Sri Lanka during the closing years of the civil war.
sonia zavesky Sonia Zavesky
Sonia joined the Board in November 2009. She has worked in media in Australia and internationally for two decades. A former ABC Radio journalist and Chief of Staff, Sonia also headed up communications teams at Greenpeace. She now runs her own media & communication training and advice company based in Sydney Australia.
